When we communicate with others, both in writing and verbally, we often get carried away with our ideas. We sometimes “dump” information on our listeners, bombarding them with concepts, challenges, solutions and random thoughts. Whilst we then feel confident that we have communicated effectively, communication is not a one-way street.

I’ve been working with an event organiser recently, helping them structure and deliver their communications for an event in Thailand. The language of the conference was English, but the organisers were aware that English was not the first language of the majority of the attendees and presenters. They wanted their messages to be understood by all the attendees, not just a handful of native English speakers, hence my involvement.
The event ended last week and I now preparing a report for the management commitee, part of which include information from the evaluation forms.
This is where it gets interesting. Feedback seems to be consistent in a number of areas, but one area particular stands out for me: the quality of the presentations. And the feedback isn’t great.
